The pelt – it’s great fur.
To eat them!
There is a certain kind of person that just loves to kill stuff. I see no difference between getting joy out of killing a deer, and killing a racoon. It’s not like either of them are dangerious to mankind or anything.
Raccoon problems can become really annoying if you avoid them for a longer period of time. These animals can cause serious damage. In cities, raccoons usually damage buildings ( mostly roofs and attics ) as well as fruit trees, gardens, garbage cans, lawns and trash containers. Also, if they find pet food which is left outside, they will steal the food and attack the pets. In some occasions, these animals will establish a “communal toilet area” which in time will result in a deposition of a big number of scats.
In rural zones, raccoons usually get their meal from farm crops or raid poultry houses. These animals typically attack birds by biting their heads or in their neck zone. The heads of the animals which are bitten by raccoons are usually left at distance from the bodies. Nevertheless, raccoons are known to be serious wild bird killers. The latest reports indicate that these animals are responsible for eliminating some populations of the nesting waterfowl.
I live in a very rural area. Raccoons can be a real problem. And indeed quite destructive. Not to mention dangerous to family pets that are kept outside.
I am an avid hunter. However I do not hunt them. Not that I get concerned when others do-legally!
Last fall I had to kill two that were attacking my aunt’s small terrier. They had brazenly
did so just at sundown. And the attack occurred in her yard.
The wounds were severe enough the vet had to put it to sleep. I did the same to the two culprits. Using a 12 gauge shotgun.. Out of precaution we did have the dead animals tested for rabies-results came back negative
Well seeing as Racoons can be a asyptomatic carriers of Rabies. Meaning you can not tell they have them unless you kill them and cut there head off adn send it into be tested.
They like to get into trash cans. They do not like to clean up after themselves. They can tear up your house garage cars your dog your cat.
You can sell the pelt. I am sure you could eat it if you boiled it long enough.
alot of people like bieing outdoors with friends and what better to do than late night hunts and good dogs
I don’t care much for coon, but they can be eaten. It’s a good pasttime, my mother has a coat, and it’s nice to know people are thinning out the little suckers to keep them from eating every turkey egg in the woods.
Many hunt for the pleasure of the hunt alone. Some will sell the pelt and a few, like myself, will eat the raccoon. I don’t mess with the old ones because they can have a pretty gamy taste as well as being tough, but a young ‘coon is good eating. I have tried it BBQd and roasted and prefer it BBQd. The meat has a very slightly sweet taste that I find unpleasant if I just roast it like a pot roast. It really is not all that bad, sort of like if you had put some sugar into your potroast, but it just does not appeal that much to me. This sweet taste is covered up by the flavor of the BBQ sauce. The meat has a nice texture similar to beef.
The PELT, also they are an extreme nucense to many people. People typically trap them rather than hunt
We hunt coons with dogs here in Indiana. We can hunt all year long except a couple of weeks before and a couple of weeks after kill season which is in now. It’s fun to train the dogs. It’s competion for your hunting buddies to see who has the best dog, and good excercise. Summer hunting is just treeing, no killing, but during kill season we sell the hides. They aren’t worth much, but most farmers appreciate everyone you kill on their farm. Mostly, it’s just for fun and leave the rifle at home, but once in awhile you have to shoot one out to make the dogs happy……..Great excercise…….
for the hats.
they are beautiful
we donate the meat to the local prison
we take care of our prisoners they deserve a good meal too
I eat raccoons, I use the pelts, and I do so for population control.
Never heard of people eating coons? What are you, a city?
I don’t go out of my way to hunt them, but if I see a raccoon whilst hunting something else, I will assume it to be rabid and kill it. Raccoons are basically nocturnal, so if you see one strolling about during the day, particularly if it shows no wariness around humans, it is probably rabid. Same with coyotes.
well some people eat em.. personally i find them annoying they eat my chickens and it bothers me when they get in the trash also theri pelt there fur does cost money , and if u dont eat them u use them for bait for cyotes or other things.
Three reasons:
#1 – It’s fun
#2 – Racoon tastes good if it is cooked right.
#3 – The hides sell for a fair price.
