My daughter who is a nature nut just called to say she found a huge patch of Morel mushrooms while she was hunting for turkey this morning. She’s all excited, I’m all stressed out! She wants me to look for good mushroom book for her. Any suggestions? (Any prayers would be greatly appreciated too… she’s my only daughter)
BTW, we live in Ohio

The best reference is probably Mushrooms Demystified: A Comprehensive Guide to the Fleshy Fungi. But I wouldn’t recommend you just get that book and go hunting. Even some mushrooms listed as edible in many book scan spark allergic reactions in some people. And sometimes mushrooms listed as edible in one book are listed as toxic in another!

I went looking for a good mushroom guide years ago, and I discovered that there’s just no substitute for finding someone who really knows mushrooms to take you mushroom hunting. The only mushrooms I’d recommend to novice gatherers are puffballs and morels, and even as distinctive as morels are, people still gather false morels.

Chances are they are morels. It is morel time in the mid west.

Do a search on Amazon for a title along the lines of Field guide to the fungi of North America or Edible fungi of the United States and Canada. (I made those titles up, but there’s bound to be something like that around.)
