A friction call is recommended with these birds as they are louder and the sound will carry further in the Western prairies and mountains and that is what you want, the sound to travel great distances. Wild turkey hunters recommend that once you get close to them you should look at what they are doing and try to imitate them. When hunting these birds, patience is indeed a great virtue.
Once you have got one turkey to answer your call, we strongly suggest that you stay where you are and be patient, making sure that he will come towards your way. Locating these birds is where the hunting actually starts; start by looking near water sources because that is the place where most of the Merriam’s are, mostly due to the reason that in many places we find drought conditions and these birds need water everyday just like humans do.
As far as Gould’s is concerned, these can be found mostly in the northern and central parts of Mexico where some of the most unique hunting adventures take place. Hunting this specie is like no other subspecies of wild turkey and the most important thing to do is to come prepared for the actual hunt. The most difficult challenge concerning this type of hunting is locating them but once you do, the Gould’s will most likely travel a great distance to your call.
If you do hear a bird gobble, it can take up to 30 minutes until the Gould’s will arrive so be very patient. You will need to cover a great deal of ground but once you have located them you can call very easy as they will start investigating that yen yelp but the important thing to do is not to move from the calling position. As far as the actual calling is concerned, a higher pitched call seems to do the job. We recommend using a two-reed mouth call as it sends a high-pitched series of aggressive calls.
A very important thing to remember is that you will most likely hunt this bird in a foreign country so you must obey the hunting regulations in that country, most likely Mexico as this is the place where the birds live. With other words, check the local authorities so that you won’t have any unpleasant surprises in your hunting adventure.
All in all, hunting these two subspecies of wild turkey can be a very amazing adventure if done properly but like all hunting expeditions, they require a lot of preparation and patience in order to have a fulfilling experience.

You need a lot of skill and patience to catch a turkey. People enjoy hunting turkey for a variety of reasons. Many enjoy the thrill of chasing a turkey more than actually bringing it down. Therefore, many hunters are attracted to turkey hunting.
If you are new to the game, the following tips will be of great help to you. Here is what many successful hunters of turkey do:
1. Find a Suitable Location
Finding a suitable location is the key to a great turkey-hunting experience. A good location is, therefore, of paramount importance. Your chosen location should not only hide you well from the birds, but also enable you to watch all their movements.
Finding an ideal location to grab a gobbler means that you should study the habits of the birds well in advance. The time you spend doing this will be worth your while. A hunter is sure to grab a gobbler if he or she has located a spot that the birds are sure to pass during a particular hour.
You can create a makeshift spot with blinds, but large trees or tree stumps serve the same purpose equally well.
2. Try Fake Calls
Fake turkey calls to attract the birds to your location. Mimicking a turkey is an art and not everybody can do it. You need to practise a lot before you can master this art. To be very effective, you have to use different types of calls. Usually, hunters begin with one type of call. If this does not fetch any result, they try another type of call till they have succeeded in attracting a turkey.
3. Use Decoys
A decoy has helped many a hunter to bring down a turkey. Using a decoy, however, is tricky business. Many hunters have actually accidentally shot a decoy. So, you have be an expert hunter if you want to use a decoy.
4. Hide from the Birds
Turkeys are very smart at spotting hunters. Therefore, to become a successful turkey hunter, you should learn to camouflage yourself well. Camouflage your entire body; however, take care not to wear a color that matches the head of a turkey.
Turkey hunting requires more skill than you might imagine. Stories of hunters who have tried turkey hunting for several seasons with no success are common. However, there is a way to achieve success at turkey hunting. Use good hunting tactics; use simple hunting tips, and you are sure to grab a gobbler or two.

Hannah’s Turkey Hunt

Me and Hannah, while trying to go set up the Double Bull Blind for the following mornings hunt, stumbled upon a few jakes. We were caught between them and where we wanted to set up so we just dropped all of our gear behind what we had to work with. We set out the decoys in a hurry and threw our facemasks on and started calling. Four jakes came over the hill in less than thirty seconds. The first shot was a clean miss as the three remaining jakes showed up the next day also. It was Hannah’s …
